1854-2004: 150th anniversary of the Bosphorus ferry


This year is the 150th anniversary of the famous Bosphorus ferries, which first entered service in 1854.



The first steam engined ferries, of various different models and size, started operating on the Bosphorus in 1837.

But the "standard Bosphorus ferry" (a standard design and size) came into existence in 1854.





















Most Bosphorus ferries (all of them since 1914) were designed by Fairfield Shipbuilders in Glasgow, Scotland.

BUILDERS OF THE BOSPHORUS FERRIES:

The models between 1854 and 1860 were built by White Shipbuilders in East Cowes, England.

The models between 1863 and 1869 were built by M. Wigram Shipbuilders of London, England.

The models between 1870 and 1872 were built by Maudslay & Sons of London, some of them were built (assembled) in Istanbul's Hasköy Shipyards.

The models between 1872 and 1890 were built by R. & H. Green Shipbuilders of London, some of them were built (assembled) in Istanbul's Hasköy Shipyards.

The models between 1890 and 1893 were built by J. W. Thames of London.

The models between 1893 and 1894 were built by Napier, Shanks & Bell of Glasgow.

The models between 1894 and 1896 were built by R. & H. Green Shipbuilders of London.

The models between 1903 and 1905 were built by Fairfield Shipbuilders of Glasgow.

The models between 1905 and 1906 were built by Armstrong Shipbuilders in Newcastle and Glasgow.

The models of 1906 were built by Fairfield Shipbuilders of Glasgow.

The models between 1906 and 1907 were built by Armstrong Shipbuilders in Newcastle and Glasgow.

The models between 1907 and 1910 were built by Atl. & Chantier de France in Dunkerque.

The models between 1910 and 1911 were built by Fairfield Shipbuilders of Glasgow.

The models of 1911 were built by Atl. & Chantier de France in Dunkerque, and by Hawthorn, Leslie & Co. in Newcastle.

The models between 1914 and 1929 were built by Fairfield Shipbuilders in Glasgow.

The models between 1929 and 1938 were built by Hasköy Shipyards in Istanbul.

The models between 1938 and 1962 were built by Fairfield Shipbuilders in Glasgow.

The models between 1962 and 1989 were built by Hasköy Shipyards in Istanbul.
